Meet the Genetics Communications Team!

Ella Gilhooly

Hi there! My name is Ella and I am from Port Washington, WI. I am a current junior studying Genetics & Genomics and Life Sciences Communication — two fields I’m incredibly passionate about and love combining in my work. Ever since attending Badger football games as a kid, I’ve dreamed of attending UW-Madison, being further inspired by the groundbreaking research happening here. Looking ahead, I hope to apply my knowledge from these two top notch programs in the biotech industry, helping to bridge the gap between science and the public.

Beyond academics, I love immersing myself in campus life! I serve on the Executive Board for Optima Dance, the largest student dance organization at UW. When I’m not dancing with Optima, I enjoy working on the Genetics Communications Team as well as being a Student Engagement Specialist for the Badger Engagement Center. In the summer of 2024, I had the amazing opportunity to be a New Student Leader for SOAR, welcoming incoming freshmen, leading small groups, sharing resources, and getting students (and their parents!) excited for life at UW.

All in all, I love being a Badger and contributing to this incredible campus community. On Wisconsin!

Annika Nesterick

Hi, I’m Annika! I am currently a senior studying Genetics & Genomics and Life Sciences Communications. I enjoy using skills from both of these fields as part of the Genetics Communications Team. I hope to continue using and growing my expertise in genetics and communication in the future as a genetic counselor.

On campus, I am involved with the Pre-Genetic Counseling Organization as the Advocacy Director. I am also a student leader for the Salt Company, a UW campus ministry. Additionally, I spend my time at UnityPoint Meriter working as a Student Genetic Counselor, part of the Perinatal Genetic Counseling Team. A few more fun facts: I am from Oshkosh, WI, and my favorite food is pizza. I highly recommend Pizza Brutta on Monroe Street.

Overall, I love being part of the Genetics Communications Team and helping to enhance the department’s communication strategies. On Wisconsin!
