New Genetics Certificate – Genetics in a Modern World

UW-Madison Genetics is proud to announce the launch of a new undergraduate certificate program, Genetics in the Modern World. The certificate is designed to provide students with an interdisciplinary understanding of how genetic science is shaping the future of medicine, agriculture, technology, and society.

This innovative certificate offers an in-depth exploration of modern genetics, covering foundational science and the far-reaching applications of genetic research. Topics include genetic engineering and the creation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), the role of the human microbiome in health, advancements in personalized medicine, cloning and gene-editing technologies such as CRISPR, and the genetic underpinnings of aging, cancer, sleep, diet, and disease.

The program was developed in response to growing student interest and the increasing relevance of genetics across multiple fields. It is designed to be accessible to undergraduates from a wide variety of academic backgrounds, including but not limited to Biology, Data Science, Computer Science, Global Health, Environmental Science, Pre-Med, and Agriculture.

The Genetics in the Modern World certificate emphasizes both scientific literacy and ethical reflection, encouraging students to consider the societal, cultural, and policy implications of genetic innovation. The curriculum is structured to foster critical thinking and interdisciplinary collaboration, equipping students with the tools to navigate and contribute to a rapidly evolving field.

Students who complete the certificate will gain not only technical knowledge of genetics but also a nuanced perspective on how these scientific developments impact individual lives and global systems. The certificate provides a strong foundation for careers in healthcare, research, biotechnology, environmental science, and public policy, as well as graduate or professional study.
