The Laboratory of Genetics is proud to announce Annika Mechelke as the recipient of this year’s Outstanding Senior Award, which recognizes exceptional achievement in academics, research, and service. Annika was chosen out of many qualified nominees, and showcases the best of what a UW Genetics student has to offer.
Annika conducted her research under the mentorship of Dr. Caitlin Pepperell, focusing on antibiotic resistance in tuberculosis biofilms. She made a notable contribution by successfully reviving a gene editing program that had previously been abandoned. Through meticulous analysis and innovative problem-solving, Annika identified and rectified key sources of error, ultimately developing a new, independent approach. Dr. Pepperell states how Annika was, “the best among all of the undergraduates I have mentored in my 12 years at UW”. Annika’s ability to work autonomously and demonstrate advanced technical expertise is a testament to her exceptional capabilities and intellectual maturity, placing her on par with graduate-level researchers.
Her contributions extend beyond the lab, as she actively participates in the university community through volunteer work with Slow Food UW, her role as a genetics peer mentor, and her involvement in Women’s Club Volleyball.
Annika has earned summer research fellowships at Duke University and the University of Pittsburgh, further cementing her reputation as a rising star in the field. Looking ahead, she will pursue her PhD in Metabolic Biology at UC Berkeley, having been accepted to several prestigious institutions, including Duke and University of Michigan.
We are excited to see all the future successes Annika will undoubtedly achieve, and we congratulate her on this well-deserved recognition!
