Meet the 2025-2026 Genetics Communications Team!

Ella Gilhooly

Hi there! My name is Ella and I am from Port Washington, WI. I graduated from UW in Spring of 2026 with a degree in Genetics & Genomics and Life Sciences Communication. Combining these two fields has allowed me to explore my passion for both science and storytelling, areas that I am excited to continue exploring.

For more than two years, I have worked on the Genetics Communications Team as a Communications Specialist. Whether it was interviewing researchers, writing feature stories, or managing our social media, I have been grateful for the chance to help share the stories that make this department such a remarkable community. Beyond my work with Genetics, I was also involved across campus through roles with the UW Carbone Cancer Center and Optima Dance, UW-Madison’s largest student dance organization.

Now, I will begin my role working in Corporate Affairs at Abbott Cancer Diagnostics (formerly Exact Sciences), where I look forward to applying my background in science communication within the biotechnology industry. As I reflect on my time at UW-Madison, I am incredibly grateful for the mentors and experiences that shaped my journey. It has been a privilege to contribute to the Laboratory of Genetics and help highlight the many strengths of this program and community.

On, Wisconsin!

Ashleigh Velez

Hi, I’m Ashleigh! I am a rising senior at UW-Madison from Northbrook, IL studying Genetics & Genomics and Life Science Communication. I hope to utilize the knowledge from both of these degrees to pursue a future career in Genetic Counseling!

I have been a part of the Genetics Communications team for about a year, working closely alongside Ella as an Undergraduate Communications Specialist. In addition to sending out biweekly newsletters to Genetics students, I have loved creating graphics highlighting upcoming events and compiling news articles about recent student and faculty accomplishments in the department.

Outside of Genetics communications, I am an active member of the Pre-Genetic Counseling Organization, and will step into the role of Secretary on the PGCO Executive Board this fall! This summer and during the 2026-2027 year, I will be working in the Weng Lab as a Biological Technician Aid studying cucumber breeding techniques and agricultural disease resistance. I am excited to finish my journey at UW-Madison this year surrounded by such a welcoming community.

On, Wisconsin!
