On March 4th, I had the opportunity to visit Promega, a leading biotech company located in Kornberg, Wisconsin. The campus was absolutely stunning, designed with a biophilic architecture that integrates nature seamlessly into the workspace. Whether you’re a plant lover or an architecture lover, the workspace at Promega is breathtaking, filled with natural light, lush greenery, and open, collaborative spaces that make it feel more like a nature retreat than a traditional lab.
During the visit, I had the opportunity to hear from various scientists from different disciplines, each playing a unique role in the biotech industry. I met professionals in production management, applications science, research & development (R&D), patent law, and production management, each offering a glimpse into different career paths in the biotech industry. Which to my surprise doesn’t always involve having to stay confined in a lab space and it involves a lot of traveling which had me very excited because I love traveling to different countries and states.
The applications scientist explained how their job involves working directly with clients, troubleshooting experiments, and ensuring that researchers worldwide can effectively use Promega’s products. The R&D scientist shared their experience in designing and developing new molecular biology tools, pushing the boundaries of scientific innovation. Meanwhile, the patent scientist’s role stood out to me because they work on securing intellectual property rights for new discoveries, highlighting the legal and business aspects of biotech.
This visit really opened my eyes to just how many different career paths exist in biotech, especially beyond the traditional academic route. It made me realize that there are so many ways to make an impact, whether it’s through research, innovation, or even the business and legal side of science. Being in that dynamic environment, surrounded by people who are passionate about what they do, made me even more excited about my future in biotech and all the possibilities ahead.
